Frances Shelley by Craig Girling

Hello, Frances here and happy to meet you:)

I make music to heal myself.  I love doing it,  it somehow makes sense of my life and makes me a nicer person :) Too long away from a musical instrument of some kind is not good for me - or those I am around:) It started as a child, piano playing was my refuge and sanctuary.  Being a bit lazy and not enjoying reading notes, I always preferred to make up my own music.  For me this is still where the magic lies.

I have been releasing music as an independent since 2000. The wild open skies and cold North Sea inspired my first two albums INTERIORS and WILDERNESS RHAPSODIES  (available on Bandcamp).

For many years music making was mostly just for friends, but In 2018 I was encouraged to come out of hiding, and my album A PLACE THAT EXISTS was released by Nils Frahm’s publishers Manners Mcdade.  It is a celebration of the wild and remote places both within and without, inspired by my frequent visits to Perthshire Scotland.  Since then all sorts of adventures and projects have arisen and I have had the good fortune to play live on some wonderful stages around the world, including Q3 Ambientfest and Latitude Festival. This year I am looking forward very much to releasing my new album SONGS OF POSSIBILITY on 02 July 2021. The general feel of the new music is one of upliftment and optimism, coming from overcoming - as so many of us have had to - the immense challenges brought about by the pandemic in 2020.

Collaboration is the greatest gift and I have been so fortunate to make music with all kinds of amazing musicians including Lubomyr Melnyk, Talvin Singh, Alexandra Hamilton Ayers, Anna Phoebe, the Ceeys brothers. I look forward to many more!

I have almost always lived in the countryside and only really feel at home when I am surrounded by trees, mountains, wild flowers, rivers and sea, these are my friends and inspire all my music.  I talk to them.   In 2021 I moved to wild and magical Sintra Portugal;  here I am near my daughter and new grand daughter and have finally found the peace and space that I need to focus on my music.

I create from an emotional need, and I hope some of what I make resonates with you too.  Thank you for your time and it would be a pleasure to hear back from you if you feel inspired to get in touch.

 with much love Frances
